You have been WARNED! The Hotel Californian did not provide the room I booked, even though I booked directly through their website. We were placed in a diferent room with a broken vent system which the hotel was not able to repair. The hotel was sold out with no other rooms. We had to find a new hotel, on the spot, in the middle of tourist season. I am a well seasoned traveler and have never experienced a situation with such little oversight from the staff. Please know the room you book may not be provided, you may also be placed across the street in an entirely separate building, above the county slew!
For a hotel with a five-star rating, our experience fell short of expectations. Over the weekend, we had three fairly simple requests: additional waters, more shampoo and conditioner as we had run out, and margaritas by the pool one afternoon. Unfortunately, each of these took over an hour and a half or more to fulfill. Guest friends of ours were staying at a nearby hotel for half the cost and came over to lay at the pool and mentioned how poorly they thought the service was for us. So, despite the great location, there are better options available. Spend a little more and head to the Rosewood. It's sad to see the brand not live up to its potential.
I am mid way into my stay and already blown away by this place. There are a lot of "5 star hotels" out there that fall short and this is not one of them.Our check in experience was fantastic. They laid out the whole resort and even walked us to our room area.The rooms are absolutely beautiful stocked with double sinks, great bath products and comfortable beds. The view from the rooms are fantastic.The Gym and Pool are fantastic with the only downside being the pool area does not have an actual bar, you have to do QR codes to get it delivered.Most enjoyable the hotel is nestled right next to the beach into a community where they have an in house wine bar with fantastic wines for tastings, a great restaurant with spectacular casual fresh food and great perks like a custom shuttle taking you within 2 miles of the resort.I am usually a tough customer and this hotel has far exceeded my expectations.The only complaint I have is they do hold private events on the patio. Our first night there was a wedding blasting music outside our door until 9pm which sucked. So if you stay here on a weekend you may want to check before you book rooms overlooking the patios.
Beautiful hotel, the architecture and interiors are stunning. Its location is great and very walkable with really good restaurants nearby, and the beach is close-by as well. There’s a rooftop pool with wonderful views of the coast. And service was very good too.We had a great experience, and we’ll definitely be back the next time we visit Santa Barbara!
We held our wedding room block at Hotel Californian May 2024 and personally stayed in the Magellan Suite.Three days prior to checking in, Caroline Cummings (the sales and catering manager), emailed my wedding coordinator and told her that we were not allowed to take photos on Hotel Californian property (other than inside our hotel room) unless we paid a $1,000 photography fee. Apparently, if you aren't hosting your actual wedding at the hotel, you need to pay a fee to take photos.This was extremely infuriating because #1 nowhere in any contract we signed or anywhere on the website is this fee mentioned. #2 over the course of a weekend, our guests gave Hotel Californian $14k+ in room venue, plus spent at least $1k at their bar. And now they're asking for more money just to take some photos? #3 she told us this DAYS before check-in for our wedding weekend which is pretty unprofessional and inconsiderate.She knew it was our wedding room block, but failed to tell us about this fee and decided to wait until the last minute. Don't you think if a bride and groom are staying at a hotel they're going to take photos? But also this fee isn't outlined ANYWHERE, so it felt like she just made it up. She tried to "work with us" by reducing it down to $500 but we refused to pay.So future brides beware: Hotel Californian will try and pull the rug out from underneath you and throw random, last minute fees at you if you aren't holding your actual wedding here.Other than that, our experience was really nice! Our guests loved the hotel and the service was great. The Magellan Suite was perfect for getting ready with my bridesmaids and we had plenty of room. The couch in the room was kind of disgusting though (it had a few stains and rips on it) but we just threw a blanket over it.Amber at the front desk was AMAZING. She was so kind and helped check all our guests in super quickly and seamlessly. Also Justin helping to park cars was wonderful.All in all, I hate to leave anything other than a 5 star review because the hotel was great! But the experience we had with Caroline Cummings was so frustrating and negative. It really left a bad taste which is unfortunate.
Good staff. Rooms? Not so much. Bathroom uses a sliding barn door. Virtually NO privacy. Not all lights worked. The one at the bed was incredibly BRIGHT!Continental breakfast quite good.Rolling luggage past rooms is very noisy! Thump! Thump! Thump!

We enjoyed this hotel with my sister who visited me from Argentina: location, comfort and design of the entire hotel are a success! The breakfast system is spectacular, with variety and quantity that each guest can choose. All the staff is friendly, attentive and experienced! 100% recommended.
I have stayed many different places in Santa Barbara while visiting my son in college. La Playa is definitely the best value. Since it doesn’t have a pool or bar/restaurant on site you skip the extra price for that. I don’t use those amenities anyway since the beach is a block away and all the culminará goodness you can possibly imagine is a quick and beautiful walk away. The rooms are extremely clean. The property is new, clean and beautiful. The price is perfect for what you get. OH AND….THERE IS FREE AMPLE PARKING!The staff is very very friendly. I’ll be staying again for sure.
Room was nice but the staff is not friendly at all. The guy who checked us in the evening of 3/21 tried to act smart with me with the keys and parking pass. Not sure if it’s because I was young. “Why do you need 4 keys if you’re just 2 people?” No sense of hospitality and had a bad attitude. The other staff members would not even say hi back when you say hello. Cleaning lady was nice. The all day coffee is nice, and the continental breakfast is descent.
Solid 4.5 if I could give it that many stars. Good hotel for the price, nice new[ish] feeling decor, room size is fair and the bed was fairly comfortable. We also loved that they had EV charging and that's why we chose this hotel for our one night in Santa Barbara. It's a bit far from things we wanted to see in SB and the map made us feel it was closer than it was since we didn't want to drive to everything, we did want to walk from our hotel. But that's not the fault of the hotel! My only complaint is going to be specific for very few travelers. I loved that they had built in dispensers for soap and shampoo as I dislike single use toiletries in hotels. But I have thick, long hair and all the dispensers gave out such a small amount of product at a time that it would have taken me and hour and a half to get out enough shampoo to wash my hair! I would just advise other women with long, thick hair, pack their own shampoo and conditioner. Then you're golden!
